You have several dogs that you love to groom, and you’re always on the lookout for new dog grooming tools that will make the process comfortable for both you and your dogs. However, believe it or not, the most important dog grooming tool is your hands.

The Bond Between a Dog and Its Owner

The bond between a dog and its owner is a unique relationship. Dogs are loyal and protective of their owners, and their owners in turn make sure that they take care of them too, by giving them food, toys, shelter, and by grooming them with the right dog grooming tools.

Many owners think that the right do grooming tools have to include such things as brushes, clippers, and scissors, and this is true. However, there is more to grooming that just those basic dog grooming tools. In order to successfully groom a dog, the owner has to build up that trust factor.

The trust factor should ideally be established between a dog and its owner when the dog is a puppy. By feeding and bathing the puppy from such an early age, the puppy begins to think of the owner as its “mother.” As such, the dog will trust its owner implicitly.

Dogs are hands-on animals, and the thing that they react to the most is touch. This is why hands are the most important dog grooming tools. If the owner grooms the dos with a heavy hand, the dog will associate that with the experience of being groomed. If the owner grooms the dog gently, the dog twill be most more amenable to the idea of being groomed.

Owners that are grooming their dogs should constantly pat them during the process, because unless the dog is used to being groomed, chances are that the dog will be stressed. Provide a relaxed atmosphere for the dog by shampooing it by gently massaging the shampoo into the dog’s coat.

Grooming can also be beneficial for the owner too. For example, if the owner has mild arthritis in the hands, the warm water and the massaging motions of applying the shampoo on the dog’s coat can actually be soothing. So, the next time an owner goes to groom their dog, they should remember that while it is important to have the necessary dog grooming tool, the most important dog grooming tool is their own hands.

English Springer Spaniel Type: Showdog NOT field dog

No. There are foods that have glucosamine in them but nowhere near enough to make even the slightest difference to a dog with arthritis.

What your dog needs is a trip to the vet for x-rays to determine how bad her arthritis is. The vet can then tell you if she needs prescription meds to keep her pain free or if you can give her glucosamine chondroitin with MSM and how much.

She deserves the best care and doesn’t have to be in pain – just take her to her vet.

The Cocker Spaniel is a generally even tempered, loving dog that is affectionate and loving. She is a good watch dog and when properly bred, a great child companion. She can do well in an apartment as long as she gets frequent long walks. A properly fenced in enclosure is better for exercise.

*Good With Children? Cocker Spaniels are great with children as long as they come from reasonably good bloodlines. They are so popular that puppy mills are churning them out and some poor traits have been showing up. As a reminder, never leave a young child unsupervised with a puppy or dog.
*Good With Other Pets? Again, they are generally good with other pets as long as they have good bloodlines.
*Temperament: This is a very friendly, loving dog and they are active.
*Approximate Adult Size. The approximate adult size (two years old or older) of the Cocker Spaniel is 14 to 15 inches to the withers (highest point of the shoulder) and 24 to 28 pounds.
*Special Health Considerations. Most dog breeds have certain inherited health problems associated with that specific breed and the Cocker Spaniel is no exception. Be on the look out for eye problems, canine hip dysplasia (genetic based looseness in the hip joint that can lead to arthritis pain and lameness), epilepsy and slipping stifles, IMHA (Immune Mediated Hemolytic Anemia), glaucoma, and patellar luxation.
This disease list is an informative guideline only. Other diseases may also be significant threats, please contact your veterinarian for a complete list.
She should visit the veterinarian several times in the first year for shots, boosters and check up. Then, as an adult, she should visit the veterinarian yearly for shots and check up. As she gets older, six years and on, she should visit the veterinarian twice a year for check ups and shots. Remember; avoid feeding your dog sweets.
*Grooming. The Cocker Spaniel has a soft, silky coat that needs almost daily brushing. Her coat can pick up brambles and debris and this must be brushed out of her coat before they form mats and cause skin problems.
Her ears should be checked once a week and be kept clean. If you have her professionally groomed, make sure ear cleaning and inspection is part of the package. No water or excess fluid should get in the dogs ears, and do not try to irrigate the ears. Ear cleaning is too complicated and critical to instruct here. Look for hair growing in the ear canal, excess wax, or moisture. If her ears have a discharge, foul odor or she seems to be in distress and you suspect an infection, or tumor, consult your veterinarian.
Her teeth should be brushed at least twice a week with toothpaste and toothbrush designed for dogs. Brushing removes the accumulation of plaque and tartar which can cause cavities (rarely) and periodontal disease. Dog periodontal disease can lead to pain, loss of teeth, bad breath and other serious disease.

Her toenails may need to be examined for growth and clipped regularly. The toenails of the rear feet grow slower than the toenails of the front feet. Generally a guillotine type trimmer is the best for this chore and competent instructions to accomplish this can be found on the net.

*Life Span. The Cocker Spaniel can live between 10 and 14 years with proper nutrition, medical care and excellent living conditions.
*History. They were first registered by the American Kennel Association in 1878.

Some Registries:
*American Spaniel Club
*UKC United Kennel Club
*NKC National Kennel Club
*CKC Continental Kennel Club
*APRI Americas Pet Registry Inc.
*AKC American Kennel Club
*FCI Federation Cynologique Internationale
*NZKC New Zealand Kennel Club
*KCGB = Kennel Club of Great Britain
*ANKC = Australian National Kennel Club
*ACR = American Canine Registry

Litter Size: 4 to 6 Cocker Spaniel puppies

Category: Sporting Group.

Terms To Describe: Sturdy, well balanced, excellent temperament, playful, trustworthy, loyal, cheerful, active, friendly,

   *SPECIAL GOOD POINTS
She is a very gentle dog.
Good watch dog.
They are an obedient dog.
*SPECIAL BAD POINTS
Can become fat if not exercised.
Puppy mills are turning out some poor specimens.
Does not like harsh training, she is very sensitive.Poor guard dog.
Can be a barker.
Some say that they are not highly intelligent.
Housebreaking can be problematic.

I have a 15 year old dog with arthritis, he can barely walk or stand. We took him to the vet yesterday and he gave us rimadryl. We have been taking it faithfully.

Is there anything else we can do for him?
If so what and what doses, how long till we see results?
Do we need to put him down?

Arthritis is a degenerative condition that can be caused by normal wear and tear on the joints over a long period of time. Eventually joint cartillage can wear down and then you have bone grating on bone, which is very painful.

Think of joint cartillage like a brick wall. Your body is the bricklayer, and time is the enemy firing weapons at your wall. Your bricklayer is pretty good at putting up bricks, but he has a very sporadic supply train (blood) giving him replacement bricks and mortar. If there was a way to increase the supply train, your bricklayer would be able to work faster. He will never be faster than the enemy, but he can stall defeat.

In my clinic we counsel clients theat treatment of arthritis is a three-pronged approach.

1) control pain and inflammation. This is achieved through the use of drugs such as NSAIDS (Rimadyl, Previcox, Deramaxx) or when these drugs become innefective, you can advance to the cortisone drugs.

2) Give the joints what they need to repair themselves (think back to your bricklayer.) This means fortifying his diet with the building blocks of cartillage- glucosamine and chondroitin. Plus, there is exciing new research that an amino acid (chromium ethylester- sold under the brand name Rejuvinate) has a catalytic effect on the glucosamine and chondroitin, making them work even better.

3) Retain muscle mass and range of motion. Mild exercise (several short walks per day- no more than what is comfortable for your dog) is very beneficial in the treatment of arthritis. There are also veterinary physical therapy centers that have underwater treadmills for dogs also, so that they can walk without thier full weight on the joints. Swimming is great, too!

At the end of the day, addressing the problem of arthritis from all three angles will give yout the best result and make him comfortable for the longest period of time, but ultimately your dog will reach a point where he is no longer having a good quality of life. No one knows your dog like you, so no one besides you- not even your vet- can know when he is ready to give up the fight.

Best of luck, and my heart goes out to you. IM me if you want any other info.

And apologies for the typos- i’m typing with a broken wrist!

I have a problem. I work all day and my dog Kettle sits cooped up inside all day. Do you know of any way to get my dog out of the house while I’m at work?

There is a simple solution to your problem. You can actually hire a dog walker to be your dog walking replacement while you are at work. Sometimes, a dog walker is more then just a necessity because many dogs that have limited dog-walking time become irritable. Dogs need to have daily exercise and human connection through dog walking. You may have even noticed your dog even acting out by chewing up your couch and favorite pair of heels when you are at work. In some instances, a dog in need of consistent dog walking will show aggression. This lack of exercise has let excess energy build up. Dog walking during the day is also necessary for many dogs because they simply can’t go a long duration without going the bathroom. You may be at work for several hours and this can be too long for dogs to go without relieving themselves and/or having a snack.

There are many things to consider when you choose a dog walker. Your dog is a member of your family so you need to go through many of the same considerations that you would when hiring a babysitter for your children. When hiring a babysitter for your children you normally look to family and friends for references. Do the same when you are looking for a dog walker. You can seek out references from friends that have dog walkers, your veterinarian, and dog groomer. They may know of individual dog walkers or dog walking services.

Make sure you find out if your dog walker has dog walking experience. Make sure that they also have a business license. Find this information and investigate it thoroughly. The last thing you want to do is leave your dog in the hands of someone that is unprofessional or may harm your dog. Feeling comfortable with a dog walker’s references is also necessary because you will need to give them a key to your home so they can pick up your pooch. They will enter your home for daily dog walking, so you must trust them like you would trust a babysitter.

Make sure you assess the services your dog walker has to offer. Will they provide special assistance to your dog especially if it is an older dog that may be blind or has arthritis? What types of care services will your dog walker provide in addition to dog walking? For example, will they also provide water and feed your dog? Will they then cleanup any dog waste? You need to understand the scope of services your dog walker is willing to provide. There are few factors to think about with regards to the actual dog walking. Will the dog walker walk your dog solo or with a group of dogs? A group of dogs may satisfy your needs, but this limits the amount of personal attention your dog can receive. You might have to pay more for a solo walk, but it could be worth the additional cost to keep your doggie happy.
