how long can a dog live without treatment of a heartworm diagnosis?

By admin

My dog is about six years old. About six weeks ago, the vet diagnosed heartworm with a blood sample. The vet indicated that the treatment will cost about $600 and there is a risk my dog may not survive treatment. I can’t afford the cost of treatment right now and I was wondering how long can he survive without it. Or is there is any home treatment or a way to slow it down.

There is no alternative home treatment. If you can not afford treatment, it would be better to have your dog humanely euthanized. Having your dogs heart eaten away by worms is a horrible way to go.

It just depends on how long he has been infected, how many worms are in the heart and lungs, and what kind of health he is in. If you don’t do the full treatment, consider giving heartworm prevention. http://www.heartwormsociety.org

If you are lucky your dog could survive longer than the heartworms, but he will probably end up with damage to his heart and lungs.

Please consult your local SPCA or humane society. Heart worm is serious and your dog WILL die.

You can get the med’s for about $100 USD but vet’s charge a lot more. Contact the above and see if they have special programs for those in need of financial assistance for your dog. They do exist throughout the states.

Please do not delay. The worms clog up your dogs arteries and will kill it. PLEASE BE COMPASSIONATE!!!!

The longer you wait the worse it will be, the harder it will be for the dog to come around, the odds will go up against the dog surviving and the more expensive the treatment will be.. Get it done now and quit playing with this.. This is deadly serious.

The new treatment for heart worms is not as deadly for the dog as the arsenic treatment was. A GOOD vet should work with you for the safest and most humane treatment of your dog. I had 2 dogs in the past who got Heartworms, one died due to treatment and the other got the newer one. He survived and my vet worked with me on the payment, although I would have paid any amount. Please seek help on this matter for your dogs sake, someone will be able to help you. You cannot let it go, the dog will suffer immensely and could you live with that?
